Early Life, Family, and Education

Christa is the daughter of Chuck Miller and his wife Bonnie Trompeter, and spent her childhood in Manhattan with her siblings, a sister and a brother. She is a niece of the famous actress Susan Saint James, and through her is related to Dick Ebersol. Christa went to the Convent of the Sacred Heart, which is an independent Roman Catholic all-girl school in the Manhattan borough of New York City. Once she finished twelfth grade there, Christa started taking acting classes, and eventually moved to Los Angeles in 1990.

Career Beginnings

Christa was actually thrown into show business from an early age; even before she was a year old, her career started as she was a star of the Wonder Bread commercial. When she was three, Christa posed for Francesco Scavullo in an Ivory soap advertisement, and was also photographed for the cover of Redbook. Unfortunately, her early career was put on hold when she was diagnosed with a benign bone tumor, but an operation made her healthy again, although she didn’t return to the entertainment world until she had finished high school.

Acting Career

Before Christa made her acting debut, she featured in a pictorial for the first US edition of the magazine Maxim. Her acting debut was a minor role in the TV series “Kate & Allie” (1985-1988), but once she moved to Los Angeles her career took a turn for the better, and in 1992 she got the part of Beth Davis in the horror thriller television film “Stepfather III”, starring Robert Wightman, Priscilla Barnes and Season Hubley, followed by a role in the crime-drama television film “A Friend to Die For”, while in 1995 she rose to prominence with the part of Katie O’Brien in the TV comedy series “The Drew Carey Show” which continued until 2002.

“The Drew Carey Show”

She auditioned for “The Drew Carey Show”, but the producers first thought of her as too inexperienced, however, with the help of Larry David, she got the part of Kate O’Brien, portraying the character from 1995 until 2002, appearing in over 180 episodes of the highly-acclaimed series, which really jump-started her career, and new successful roles came her way.

Continual Success

In 1999 Christa portrayed Kathy in the award-winning romantic comedy film “Smiling Fish & Goat on Fire”, starring Derick Martini, Steven Martini and Amy Hathaway, while in 2001 her now husband Bill Lawrence chose her for the part of Jordan Sullivan in the TV series “Scrubs” (2001-2010), which he created. In 2009, the two decided to work together again, this time on the TV series “Cougar Town” (2009-2015), but since which Christa has been focused more on her family life than her professional career, and has appeared only in a couple more titles, such as the comedy-drama film “Hot Air” in 2016, and the thriller film “Breaking In”, which came out in May 2018.
