Beth is the son of former professional baseball player Garry Smith, who played for Kansas City Athletics in the Professional Baseball League. She was also an ice skater and a gymnast during her younger years. Her first marriage was to Keith A. Barmore in 1991, and they had a child together but their marriage ended in divorce. She later married Duane “Dog” Chapman in 2006, and the couple moved to Hawaii so that they could pursue more work as bounty hunters and bail bondsmen. She pursued a similar career to that of her husbands, becoming the youngest bail bondswoman in the family before one of Dog’s daughters claimed that title – they have two children together. Soon their unusual occupation was featured on television, leading to the creation of the series “Dog the Bounty Hunter”.

Dog the Bounty Hunter

The reality television series focuses on the main character Dog and his family as they work as bounty hunters. The show mainly takes place in Hawaii, though it also shows Dog’s home state of Colorado from time to time. It does take other exceptions a few times as the team or family move to other locations in the US as part of their work. In the show, the family locate and arrest people who have broken the terms of their bail agreements, bur also focuses heavily on how Dog and the family show compassion on some ex-convicts, and give them advice.

Dog is an ex-convict himself, and realized his passion for bounty hunting after he saved a criminal from being killed while being in jail. As the show further progressed, viewers were taken deeper into the personal lives of the family, airing significant events in their lives. They saw how one of their children became a licensed bail bondswoman and bounty hunter. The show also showcased marriages, arrests, deaths and the like during its run for a total of eight seasons before being cancelled in 2012. However, it was not the end for Chapman as they would start another project with CMT.

On the Hunt and Other Projects

In 2013, the “Dog the Bounty Hunter” spin-off entitled “Dog and Beth: On the Hunt” started airing as a part of the network CMT. The show would run for three seasons but didn’t feature the same cast of the original show, this time focusing only on the couple and Dog’s son Leland. They fly from Hawaii to other parts of the US to assist in catching criminals, and also discusses how they could improve business and make things more efficient with new technology as well as new strategies. During the end of the third season, two of their children quit the business, and in 2016 it was announced that the Chapman’s were leaving the network, effectively cancelling the show.


In 2017, Smith became a part of an A&E two hour special entitled “Dog and Beth: Fight of Their Lives” which is a documentary about her battle with throat cancer. She was diagnosed early in 2017, with the prognosis being she had only a 50/50 chance of survival. However, later in the year they received a call from a pathologist stating that tests showed that she no longer had any signs of cancer, but had to undergo surgery to have a stage 2 tumor removed from her throat.

Personal Life

For her personal life, it is known that Beth had been married twice, with her second marriage being to Duane “Dog” Chapman, actually his fifth marriages, with numerous children from those marriages. They already knew each other before Beth’s first marriage, but their relationship was always on and off. They stayed together for 16 years before deciding to marry in 2006. Their children have been heavily involved with their careers and business.
