Born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, McMurry is the daughter of Jane Hight and Dr. John E. McMurry. She has a sister named Allison Louise McMurry. Although not much information is known regarding her early education, it is reported that she has always had a passion for golf. even at an early age, and played it in high school. McMurry later on attended the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism and Communication Studies. McMurry’s early years in the news and sports industry started at CBS Sports, and WCBS-TV in 2005. She worked as a researcher as well as a golf cart driver for people who were covering the PGA Tour. She also worked as a runner for the National Football League (NFL) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association for Basketball. Other roles for the network included becoming a field producer, a production assistant, and a stand-in host. Her early years behind the camera helped set-up her career, and also established her net worth.

Before being married to Evan White, McMurry was known to have dated Michael Phelps, the 23-time Olympic gold medallist. It was reported that they began dating in 2013, and even made a public appearance when they attended the ESPY Awards together. However, he two inexplicably broke-up.
