Carter Page’s Early Life and Education

Carter William Page was born on the 3^rd June 1971 in Minneapolis, Minnesota USA, into the family of Rachel Greenstein Page and Allan Robert Page, who served as the manager and executive of the Central Hudson Gas & Electric Company. Although originating from Minnesota, Carter grew up in Poughkeepsie, New York State, where he attended Our Lady of Lourdes High School, from which he matriculated in 1989. He continued his education by enrolling in the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, from which he graduated with distinction in 1993, in the top 10% of his class, for which he was rewarded with the Trident Scholar Program, which gave him an opportunity for independent academic research.

During his studies, he served as a researcher for the House Armed Services Committee under Les Aspin’s tenure, who was a US Representative at that time. Page spent five years in the US Navy, and was also deployed to Morocco as a member of a United Nations peacekeeping mission, serving as an intelligence officer. In 1994, Carter obtained his Master of Arts degree from Georgetown University, majoring in National Security Studies.

Upon leaving the US Navy, Carter continued his education further at New York University from which he obtained his Master of Business Administration degree in 2001. He also completed the Council of Foreign Relations’ fellowship.

In 2012, Carter Page received his PhD from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies. However, prior to receiving this honor, his doctoral dissertation, which covered the topic regarding Asian countries and their transition from communism to capitalism, was rejected twice before he eventually secured acceptance.

Page began his professional career in 1998 when he became a member of the strategy consulting firm named Eurasia Group, but which he left only a couple of months later. In 2000 he joined the Bank of America’s Merrill Lynch Wealth Management office in London, UK, where he landed the job of an investment banker. In the course of the next eight years, Carter rose through the company’s ranks and landed the position of the vice-president of Merrill Lynch’s Moscow headquarters, and eventually served as the Chief Operating Officer of the company’s energy and power department in New York City.
