In 1985, he won the National Magazine Award for Essays and Criticism, being very critical of guest columnist Mike Barnicle, who would later resign from the Boston Globe due to allegations of fabrication and plagiarism. This later led to a feud in which Barnicle tried to spread rumors that Carr’s wife was having an affair with boxer Riddick Bowe.

Other books have included “Hitman: The Untold Story of Johnny Martorano”, “Rifleman: The Untold Story of Stevie Flemmi”, and “Ratman: The Trial and Conviction of Whitey Bulger”.

The Winter Hill Gang

Most of Howie’s non-fiction books were about the Winter Hill Gang, specifically about brothers Whitey and Billy Bulger. He released his books a few months before Whitey Bulger was arrested, having been on the run for 16 years. He initially wrote the book intrigued by the dynamic of the politician and gangster brothers, and believed that Whitey Bulger wanted him dead, and had tried to kill him several times because of him writing the story of the brothers. He took considerable precautions to keep both Whitey and another gangster, Weeks off of his tail.

He mentioned later in an interview that he started mixing up his routine so that he couldn’t get caught. He drove different ways every evening to get home, and parked in a space from which he could get away quickly. He stopped meeting face-to-face with anyone he didn’t know, and stayed out of bars.
