Cathy Areu was born in 15 February 1971, in Summit, New Jersey USA, and is a journalist, author and news analyst, best known for making frequent appearances on television. She is also the founding publisher of the magazine entitled “Catalina”.

Early Life and Education

While very little is known about her childhood or how she developed an interest in journalism, it is known that Cathy comes from Hispanic (Cuban) descent, with her father an electronics engineer and her mother a mathematician. In 2000, Areu started writing an occasional column for the Washington Post, entitled “First Person Singular” which often included short interviews with high profile celebrities; some of the names featured were James Baker, Laura Bush, Al Franken, Nancy Pelosi and Alberto Gonzales. She worked on the column for a decade, and referred to herself as a contributing editor to the Washington Post. However, the ombudsman for the post, Andrew Alexander later denied her claims and said that her title was inaccurate.

Areu would contribute to other publications such as USA Today, and Latina Style, and she also founded her own publication, entitled “Catalina” magazine which was created to break the stereotypes of Hispanics in the entertainment industry, as well as the US media. During its first year, circulation reached 30,000 and promoted itself through online promotions, national events as well as media coverage. It is the official publication of the National Association of Latina Leaders, and was named as “Lead Launch” by Folio magazine. The multi-platform media company continues to remain active today.

Cathy has written her first book, entitled “Latinos”, which is a collection of stories by some of the best known Hispanic figures in the country, and published by Barricade Books. Due to her numerous contributions and work over the years, she’s been featured on television as a part of various political talk shows. She’s been seen as a part of “The O’Reilly Factor”, which was hosted by political commentator Bill O’Reilly, covering current events including controversial political issues. She also featured in “The Sean Hannity Show”, a radio talk show hosted by Sean Hannity.
