Conan is the son of physician and epidemiologist Thomas Francis O’Brien, who worked at Harvard Medical School as a professor of medicine, and Ruth, nee Reardon, a lawyer and partner at the Boston firm Ropes & Gray. He went to Brookline High School, where he started showcasing his writing skills by serving as the managing editor of the school newspaper entitled The Sagamore. He was valedictorian of the class of 1981, and upon matriculation enrolled at Harvard University, graduating magna cum laude in history and literature.

His career started in the late ‘80s; he was first the writer for the HBO’s series “Not Necessarily the News”, and “The Wilton North Report”, while also becoming a part of the comedy troupe “The Groundlings”, before in 1988 being hired directly by Lorne Michaels as the writer for “Saturday Night Live”. In 1991 he quite “SNL” after one of his sketches failed to be incorporated into the show, and in the next two years he worked as a writer and producer for “The Simpsons”.
