Who is Jeremy Bash?

Jeremy B. Bash was born on 13 August 1971, in Arlington, Virginia USA, into a conservative family of Jewish descent. He is a national security analyst as well as a strategic advisory executive, best known for being a former US Department of Defense chief of staff from 2011 to 2013. He previously served as the chief of staff of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) for two years.

Jeremy was raised in Arlington, Virginia, where he attended the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School, and after matriculating enrolled in Georgetown University where he became an editor-in-chief of the college’s newspaper – “The Hoya”. He graduated as magna cum laude and then continued his studies by attending Harvard Law School. During his time at Harvard, he also served as editor of the publication “Harvard Law Review”, before completing his Juris Doctorate in 1998. He became the clerk for the Eastern District of Virginia US Judge Leonie Brinkema, before being admitted to the bars in Virginia and Maryland. He served in that capacity in a few years before working for the presidential campaign of Al Gore and Joe Lieberman as the national security issues director in 2000, advising staff, candidates, and surrogates on matters regarding national security policy, including missile defense, trade, counter-terrorism, and peace in the Middle East.

Government Work

In 2001, Bash focused more on private law practice with the firm O’Melveny & Myers based in Washington D.C. which focused on litigation, regulatory matters, and congressional investigations. Three years later, he became the chief minority counsel on the US House of Representatives Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, for California Representative Jane Harman. He then served as a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and in 2009 became the chief of staff at the CIA as a senior advisor to Leon Panetta.

He stayed there for two years, before joining Panetta as a chief of staff at the US Department of Defense for another two years. With his role there, he worked on numerous initiatives including the formation of two defense budgets, a new cyber strategy, intelligence operations, counter-terrorism operations, and a new defense strategy. After completing his run with the Department of Defense, he founded his own strategic advisory firm with Andrew Shapiro and Philippe Reines called Beacon Global Strategies. The company is focused on foreign affairs, homeland security, and national defense.

Other Work

Jeremy has spoken on courses and conferences for schools such as the National War College, the American University, and Georgetown Law School. He also made a minor appearance in the HBO movie entitled “Recount”, which is based on the 2000 presidential election recount in Florida. He was portrayed in the film “Zero Dark Thirty” in which he is called and credited by first name only. He was also named in the TIME Magazine “40 Under 40” list in 2010.

In 2013, he was interviewed by The New York Times regarding the US Special Forces Operations raid on Tripoli, Libya which resulted in the capture of terrorist Abu Anas al-Libi. This later led to more television appearances, as he became a regular commentator on PBS NewsHour, and was interviewed on ABC World News. He also started working with NBC News and MSNBC as a national security analyst.

Personal Life and Social Media

For his personal life, it is known that Bash was married to broadcast journalist Dana Bash from 1998 to 2007, who is known for her work as an anchor, reporter, and political correspondent for the news network CNN. Jeremy is now married to the Vice President of the American Hospital Association, Robyn Bash. They have been married since 2009 though not many details are available about their relationship.
