Who is Philip Rivers?

Philip Rivers was born on 8 December 1981, in Decatur, Alabama USA, and is a professional American Football player, best known for being the quarterback of the National Football League (NFL) team, the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Wealth of Philip Rivers

How rich is Philip Rivers? As of late-2018, sources inform us of a net worth that is at $80 million, earned through a successful career as a professional football player. He has been selected to the Pro Bowl seven times, and is fourth all-time in consecutive starts by a quarterback in NFL history.

Early Life and Football Beginnings

At an early age Philip was exposed to football, thanks to his father who was the head coach of the team at Decatur High. He later attended that high school, and wore the number 17 jersey in honor of his father who had worn the same number. However, he moved to Athens High School, and played for the school’s team when his father also became the head coach of that school.

During his senior year, he established himself as the best prep passer in Alabama, which led him to receive several offers from colleges, but he rejected them to go to a program where he would have more playing time, eventually to North Carolina State who seriously recruiting him as a quarterback, and where he played for Coach Chuck Amato’s NC State Wolfpack football team, helping the school to an 8-4 record during his freshman year, and winning an MVP award during that year’s Tangerine Bowl, which he won again the following year.

College Career Into the NFL

In 2002, Rivers led the Wolfpack to nine straight victories making it the best start in the school’s history and he was once again honored an MVP performance. This was followed up by an outstanding senior season, which made him the most productive and durable quarterback in school history – he was considered a Heisman candidate but was never invited to the presentation. He set almost every NC State and ACC passing record, with his jersey being retired before his final home game.

During the 2004 NFL Draft, Rivers was projected to be an early first round, pick though there were some concerns from various general managers, but he was selected fourth overall by the New York Giants, although on draft day immediately traded to the San Diego Chargers for Eli Manning, as Manning did not intend to play with the Chargers. Rivers became one of 17 quarterbacks taken during the draft, which produced four high profile quarterbacks in Schaub, Rivers, Roethlisberger and Manning, comparing favourably to that of 1983, which had John Elway, Jim Kelly, and Dan Marino. He signed a $40.5 million contract with the Chargers, but still began the season as a third quarterback option.

NFL Career

It wasn’t until 2006 that Philip became a starter for the team, with high expectations. After five starts, he was named the second best NFL quarterback under 25 years of age, and he continued to perform significantly well throughout the season. The following year, he played an entire game despite a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), establishing him as one of the gutsiest players of the sport, later undergoing surgery to repair the torn muscle.

In 2009, he re-signed with the Chargers with a 6-year $92 million contract extension, and was later voted to his second Pro Bowl. Over the next few years, he would lead the league in passing yards, continuing to perform at a high level. In 2013, many started to question as whether or not his career was on a decline, but despite that he signed a 4-year $84 million contract extension as he still proved his consistency, setting franchise records, and despite struggling in 2016, he bounced back the following year, then in 2018, he reached 400 yards in a game for the 10th time in his career.

Personal Life

For his personal life, it is known that Rivers married his sweetheart form high school, Tiffany in 2001, and they have eight children together. He is known to be a man of simple tastes, mentioning that his priorities are his family and his football team. He also does a lot of charity work during his free time, mainly with the Rivers of Hope Foundation which helps foster children, and which was able to raise more than $1 million thanks to numerous contributions from him. Thanks partly to his work with them, he became one of three finalists for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.
