Early Life and Education
Pat was born into a very well-known political family, with his father being A. Willis Robertson who served as a US Senator, while his mother was a musician. He attended The McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and after matriculating with honors, enrolled at Washington and Lee University, graduating in 1951 with a degree in History, and as magna cum laude.
In 1948 the draft was reinstated, and he opted to join the Marine Corps, serving most of his time in an office in Japan as a liquor officer, thanks to the influence of his Senator father who wanted him away from the action in the Korean War. He was promoted to First Lieutenant in 1952 before returning to the US. He went on to study for a law degree in Yale Law School, being near the top of his class but failing in his attempt at the New York bar examination. After his conversion, he then attended The Biblical Seminary in New York, where he completed a Master of Divinity degree in 1959.
Christian Broadcasting Career
In 1961 Robertson became a minister of the Southern Baptist Convention, and established the Christian Broadcasting Network by buying a UHF station in Portsmouth, Virginia. He then bought a local access cable TV channel which he named CBN, and canvassed local churches in the area to receive his new channel, firmly established through donations of various churches.
Other Endeavors
In 1986, Pat announced his intention to run for the Republican nomination for President of the United States and raised millions for his campaign funds. He also surrendered his ministerial credentials, and passed leadership of CBN over to his son. However, he ran against incumbent Vice President George H. W. Bush, and after being eliminated endorse Bush before he returned to his work in broadcasting.
Aside from his media holdings in the US, Pat also has holdings in Africa, Asia and the UK. He has been known to make several big predictions over the course of his lifetime, but most have not come to pass, for example, in 1982 he predicted that doomsday was going to happen and judgment will be on the earth. He also made a failed prediction that Obama wouldn’t be re-elected on a second term. He also predicted a recession in 2008, but recession was already happening in the US in early 2007.
