Early Life, Siblings, and Education

Of Dutch, Italian, English, and Irish ancestry, Urijah is the middle child born to Suzanne and Theo Faber. He grew up in Lincoln with his older brother Ryan and younger sister Michaela Tastad. He matriculated from Lincoln High School, upon which he enrolled at the University of California at Davis, acquiring a bachelor’s degree in Human Development. During his time at UC-Davis, Urijah was wrestling for the university team, and participated in the NCAA tournaments in 2001 and 2002.

Career Beginnings

Urijah became professional in 2003 when he entered the Gladiator Challenge promotion, and the same year made his debut, in which he defeated Poes Manne. He continued rather successfully in the promotion, taking a shot at a title after just two wins in the promotion, defeating David Velasquez for the GC Bantamweight title. Following his win, Urijah started fighting in the King of the Cage promotion, but also remained in GC, taking wins wherever he appeared. He defended his GC Bantamweight Championship title by defeating Hiroyuki Abe, and also won the vacant King of the Cage Bantamweight Championship title in November 2004, after defeating Eben Kaneshiro. He won the next five matches to defend his title, defeating such mixed martial artists as Hiroyuki Abe, Shawn Bias, Charles Bennett, and Charlie Valencia, and Bibiano Fernandes.

Rise to Prominence and Decline

As his skills improved, Urijah was now ready for the next level, and as a result he joined World Extreme Cage-fighting, making his debut on the 17th March 2006 against Cole Escovedo, which was at the same time a title match and he became the new WEC Featherweight Champion. He held the title until the 5th November 2008, when he lost it to Mike Brown, only his second career defeat, having defended his title five times, defeating fighters as Joe Pearson, Dominick Cruz, Chance Farrar, Jeff Curran, and Jens Pulver.

He scheduled another fight with Brown in June 2009, but Faber was again defeated, this time by a unanimous decision. He took some time to recover from damage caused by Brown, before returning to ring in January 2010, defeating Raphael Assunção. He then scheduled a fight against José Aldo for the WEC Featherweight Championship on April 24, 2010, at WEC 48, but again suffered defeat.

Bantamweight, UFC, and Retirement

After a couple of lost matches in the featherweight category, Urijah moved to bantamweight and in his first fight defeated Japanese fighter Takeya Mizugaki, which earned him Submission of the Night honors.

As WEC merged with the UFC, Urijah officially became a part of the UFC and continued to fight in Bantamweight category. He had mixed success but lost in title matches, including several shots at the UFC Bantamweight title, but losing to Dominic Cruz,  and then to Renan Barão. His last fight was held on the 17th December 2016, in which he defeated Brad Picket, following which Faber announced his retirement. During his career that lasted 13 years, Urijah accomplished a record of 34 wins and 10 lost matches.
