They all seem to know rules you weren’t ever taught and react to everything in illogical ways. You get laughed at a lot, and made fun of for how strange you are when you are being yourself. Everything is loud, and bright, and crowded but no one else seems to notice. Things that seem to be fine or even fun for those around you are torture for you. You’re so SMART, they say. Why can’t you just do things like everyone else?! You wonder this too. You’re clearly missing something but you can’t understand what. You study for years and years and years. You learn from every mistake, and there are A LOT. You spend so much time trying to hide how you’re different that you don’t know who you are anymore. You can now almost flawlessly mimic these people, but you still can’t connect to them. You aren’t like them, and no matter how hard you try (and you try REALLY hard) they just know. Sometimes you can fool them for a while but everyone sees it eventually. So, imagine living that life for a couple of decades. Then you find out, you aren’t defective – you’re just different. You’re autistic. You don’t communicate the same way. You aren’t crazy, you respond differently to sensory input, you don’t understand anyone’s emotions, you have special interests.
